Gustav Holst
|
|
(1874–1934) English composer of Swedish descent. For most of his career he combined composing with the teaching of music (at St Paul's Girls' School and Morley College). Like others of his generation he was at first much influenced by English folk music, but he was more attuned than most to new developments on the Continent – as seen in his best-known work, The *Planets (1914–16). The house where he was born in Cheltenham is kept as a museum.
