Hobson's Choice
|
|
(1915) Play by Harold Brighouse (1882–1958), one of the so-called 'Manchester school' of realistic dramas of the early 20C. The traditional *Hobson's choice means no choice, which is the predicament of the drunken and domineering Henry Hobson, owner of a boot shop in Salford, when his daughter Maggie marries his best craftsman Will Mossop and sets up in business against him. By the end of the play the firm of Mossop and Hobson is running his shop as well as theirs. The play was filmed by David Lean in 1953 with Charles Laughton as Hobson and John Mills as Mossop; and in 1989 it was made the basis of a three-act ballet by David Bintley.
