(1838–1912) Pioneer in housing reform, whose innovation was to buy and manage, in 1864, some slum property in the Marylebone district of London. Instead of her tenants being visited weekly for the rent by the agent of a slum landlord, they now saw the representative of a benevolent organization. The experiment paid its way, and her concept of a housing association became widely imitated. Her knowledge of urban slums made her a campaigner for the preservation of open spaces, and as such she was one of the founders of the *National Trust.
