(1929–75) Racing driver associated in particular with the *BRM team. He won the world championship with them in 1962, and was runner up in each of the three following years. He was champion again in 1968, driving for *Lotus. He is the only Formula One champion to have achieved the grand slam of motor racing by also winning the other two major events – Indianapolis in 1966 and Le Mans in 1972. He died in an air crash when piloting his own plane.
