David Octavius Hill
|
|
(1802–70) Scottish landscape painter who became a pioneer portrait photographer. The reason was connected with the foundation of the *Free Church. Hill felt moved to attempt a vast group portrait of the ministers who had broken away from the Church of Scotland, and he enlisted the young Edinburgh photographer, Robert *Adamson, to help with the detail of so many faces. The resulting images, powerful in their own right, inspired him to continue with Adamson. Hill's expertise in composition and the use of light, backed up by Adamson's technical skills, made their portraits much in demand. When Adamson died, less than five years after their first collaboration, Hill returned to painting.
