(1929) The very successful first novel of Richard Hughes (1900–76), often quoted as a breakthrough from an idealized Victorian view of childhood and the beginning of a tradition leading to *Lord of the Flies. Five children are seized by pirates in the West Indies; during their adventures on the pirate ship a 10-year-old girl, Emily, murders a fellow captive. Rich descriptions of tropical scenery, together with the children's heightened but distorted perception of events, give the book a quality which is both poetic and down-to-earth.
