(35km/22m W of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) Town in Northumberland noted in particular for its priory church. The crypt survives from the 7C Saxon church of St Wilfrid, but the outstanding features are the Early English choir and extensive transepts from the priory of *Augustinian canons founded in 1113. In the south transept is the famous Night Stair, a broad flight of steps leading to the dormitory above, used by monks attending night-time services.
