Robert Herrick
|
|
(1591–1674) Master of the lyric poem in miniature, as in his widely known *Cherry ripe and *Gather ye Rose-buds. As a young man he was pleasure-loving and worldly-wise, but he spent his life from the age of 38 as the bachelor vicar of a quiet Devon parish (except for the Commonwealth years, when he was removed for his royalist sympathies). Some 1200 of his poems, in an exceptionally wide range of forms but nearly all short, were published in 1648 under the title Hesperides.
