Hereward the Wake
|
|
(11C) Anglo-Saxon rebel hero who attempted an uprising in 1070 against *William the Conqueror. He made his headquarters on the Isle of *Ely, which became a famous place of refuge until recaptured by William. Hereward was believed to have escaped, and to have lived on with a royal pardon. Legend later provided him with a wide range of daring exploits against the Normans. The name 'the Wake', which is believed to have meant 'the watchful one', was a later addition.
