George Herbert
|
|
(1593–1633) One of the leading *metaphysical poets. An aristocrat by birth, with many opportunities for worldly advancement, and a conscientious parish priest by choice, he wrote only devotional poems. A mood of simple piety transcends the subtle torments of spiritual conflict, a combination which brought Herbert many admirers in his own century and again in ours. His poems circulated only in manuscript during his life and were published after his death in a single volume, The Temple (1633).
