Townsend Thoresen car ferry which capsized on 6 March 1987 just outside the Belgian port of Zeebrugge as it sailed for Dover. It settled on its side on the sea bed, half out of the water; the death toll was 189, with four more reported missing. The ferry was of the roll-on roll-off type and had sailed without its car doors being closed. In 1990 seven employees of the company were put on trial for manslaughter, but during the case the charges were dropped and the jury was instructed to find them not guilty.
