(19km/12m N of Dundee) Imposing baronial castle, originally 14C but much added to up to the 19C. The central part is of the 17C, including the great spiral staircase set in an angle of the building, the long drawing room with its barrel-vaulted ceiling of decorative plaster, and the wood-panelled chapel with a ceiling by Jacob de Wet. Glamis has always been the home of the Lyon family, which includes the present *Queen Mother. Since her marriage in 1923, the rooms now called the Royal Apartments have been kept for her use.
