(21km/13m E of Penzance) Town in Cornwall, known in particular for its Furry Dance (a name often said to be a version of 'floral' but more probably linked to an annual 'fair'). The event is held on May 8, or the previous day if that is a Sunday, and the festivities include four separate processional dances in which couples move through the streets and in and out of houses. For the main dance, at noon, the gentlemen wear *morning dress and the ladies long formal dresses and hats. The Furry Dance is recorded from the early 17C and is probably much older.
