Hebrides
|
|
Islands off the west coast of Scotland. *Skye is the most northerly and the largest island of the Inner Hebrides, the group closer to the coast; *Lewis with Harris is similarly the largest and most northerly island in the Outer Hebrides. The missionaries of St *Columba reached the islands in the 6C; from the 8C *Viking raiders dominated the area, eventually establishing an independent kingdom which ended in the 13C (after the Battle of *Largs). The title Lord of the Isles was then created for the feudal lord of the area; it was forfeited to the Scottish crown in 1493 and is now held by the eldest son of the sovereign.
