The Welsh harp and the Irish harp are specific variants of this extremely ancient musical instrument, and in both these Celtic regions the harp has been of almost mystical significance. It is the heraldic symbol of Ireland, on Irish coins from the 16C and representing Ireland in the *royal arms. It was also the symbol of office of Welsh *bards.
