Harewood House
|
|
(11km/7m N of Leeds) Palladian mansion built 1759–71 for Edwin Lascelles by John *Carr, with interiors by Robert *Adam. Furniture commissioned for the house from *Chippendale and a park landscaped by Capability *Brown complete Harewood's immaculate pedigree for its period. Today Adam's columned entrance hall has a centrepiece with a rather different pedigree, a massive alabaster sculpture of the original Adam by *Epstein. In 1922 the Lascelles became linked with the royal family when the 6th earl of Harewood (1882–1947) married the *Princess Royal, daughter of George V.
