Hampstead

(London NW3) As the nearest hilly region to the city, lying just a few miles to the northwest, Hampstead and its famous heath (today 273ha/676ac of open countryside) provided rich Londoners with a place of refuge from the plague long before becoming fashionable in the 18C for medicinal waters. In modern times the district has been a favourite residential area for writers and musicians.
