Ham House
|
|
(19km/12m SW of central London) Red-brick house on the south bank of the Thames which is the most perfect surviving example of *Restoration taste. Built originally in 1610, it was enlarged and completely redecorated by the duke and duchess of Lauderdale in the 1670s. Their lavish wood inlays and carvings and their leather wall hangings survive (and even some satin and silk), together with much of the furniture mentioned in three contemporary inventories.
