Hallé Orchestra
|
|
Manchester's principal orchestra, founded in 1858 by Charles Hallé (1819–95), a German pianist and conductor who had moved to England in 1848. Until his death he continued to conduct the orchestra's annual series of concerts (of which Manchester's Free Trade Hall became the home) and to perform as the piano soloist. The longest-serving conductors since then have been Hamilton Harty (1920–33), John Barbirolli (1943–70) and James Loughran (1971–83).
