Earl Haig
|
|
(Douglas Haig, 1861–1928, KCVO 1909, earl 1919) Commander-in-chief from December 1915 of the British army fighting on the western front in *World War I. It was he who directed the campaign of slow attrition, from the battles of the *Somme onwards, which cost hundreds of thousands of lives but eventually wore down the German opposition. After the war he campaigned strongly for a fair deal for the returning troops and was instrumental in the creation of the *British Legion, of which he became the first president.
