Giles
|
|
(Carl Ronald Giles, 1916-2000) Cartoonist from 1943 for the Daily and Sunday Express, whose work has been reissued as an annual every year since 1945. His wartime cartoons, often featuring Hitler and Mussolini with their cronies, were already in the crowded format, full of Dickensian character and incident, which is his trademark. Subsequently the large and chaotic Giles family became his theme, centring on the squat little figure of Grandma; only a fraction of her pugnacious bespectacled face is visible between her black coat and hat, but it is enough to suggest that she may erupt at any moment.
