gymkhana
|
|
A word invented by the British in India in the mid-19C, probably to give 'gymnasium' a more Indian flavour. It was applied to a place where games of any kind could be played. Back in Britain it later came to mean more specifically an event with competitions on horseback. As such the gymkhana has become a central feature of *pony club life.
