Member of the *Commonwealth since 1966, having previously been known as British Guiana. This part of the north coast of South America was settled by the Dutch from the 17C, with occasional interventions by the French and British. Britain seized it in 1796, during the *French Revolutionary Wars, and in 1814 bought the three territories of Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice from Holland. They were grouped together as the crown colony of British Guiana in 1831, and became independent in 1966.
