Guides
|
|
The girls' branch of the scouting movement, founded in 1910 by Agnes, the sister of *Baden-Powell (who had been somewhat surprised when a large contingent of girls insisted on joining his first rally of scouts at Crystal Palace). The name was originally Girl Guides, changed to Guides in 1992. There are now some 8.5 million Guides in more than 100 countries. From 1914 girls aged 8–11 were admitted as *Brownies; and a new category of Rainbow Guides was established in 1988 for the 5–7 age group.
