groundnut scheme
|
|
An attempt promoted by the Labour government in 1946 to grow groundnuts (another name for peanuts) on unused land in Africa (at Kongwa in Kenya). By 1949 it had proved an expensive failure. The sheer improbability of the scheme as a government venture, together with its cost to the taxpayer, ensured its place in the public's memory as a famous fiasco.
