(1898–1972) Scottish pioneer of documentary films in Britain. He directed his first, Drifters, in 1929. Thereafter he became leader of a production team for a succession of films including Industrial Britain (1933), The Song of Ceylon (1934), Coal Face (1935) and Night Mail (1936. Among the directors he employed was the American Robert Flaherty, who with his Nanook of the North (1922, on the life of the Eskimos) had effectively invented the documentary genre.
