Earl Grey
(Charles Grey, 1764–1845, 2nd earl 1807) Politician who succeeded Charles James Fox in 1806 as leader of the *Whig party. He was prime minister from 1830 to 1834, at the head of a coalition cabinet committed to parliamentary reform. His place in history is assured by his having steered the *Reform Act of 1832 through parliament against strong opposition.
The very popular blend of China tea known as Earl Grey is said to derive from a special mixture which he received from China – a present, the story goes, from a grateful mandarin whose life had been saved by a member of an embassy sent out by Lord Grey.
