(Joyce Phipps, 1910–79, m. Reginald Grenfell 1929) Comedienne who from 1939 established a reputation in revue with quirky monologues on the oddities of human behaviour. By 1954 she was touring the world with her own one-woman two-hour show. She also became a well-known character actress in films (particularly in the series based on Ronald *Searle's St Trinian's), and in her later years she was a regular panellist on a TV music quiz, Face the Music.
