Greensleeves
|
|
A tune continuously popular in England since the 16C. Several mentions of it survive from the 1580s when it first acquired a name (from a ballad set to it, in which the singer loves the faithless Lady Greensleeves), but the tune itself is almost certainly older – though there is no foundation for the popular belief that it was written by *Henry VIII.
