Green Party
|
|
Britain was late on the scene with its Green party. There was a Green member in the Swiss parliament in 1979, nine were elected in Belgium in 1981 and 28 won seats in the German Bundestag in 1983. In 1989 the British Green party, nurtured by Sara Parkin (b. 1946) and Jonathon Porritt (b. 1950), surprised the nation by coming from almost nowhere to take 2.3 million votes (15% of the poll) in the election for the European parliament. Another prominent figure among the Greens has been David Icke (b. 1952), an ex-footballer and sports broadcaster who in 1991 declared himself 'an aspect of the Godhead'. Amid much wrangling between those for and against Icke, the party began to show signs of disintegration and it won only 1.3% of the vote in the 1992 general election.
