(56,000 in 1991) Port and resort on the east coast of Norfolk. It was badly bombed in the war but many of its oldest parts have been restored, including the characteristic Rows (narrow streets of fishermen's houses running down at right angles to the sea) and the 12–13C St Nicholas, said to be the largest parish church in the country. The birthplace of Anna Sewell, author of *Black Beauty, is now a museum; and south of the town is a superb monument to Nelson which long predates London's *Nelson's Column.
