Iron steamship designed by *Brunel which inaugurated the age of transatlantic liners, being the first to be driven by a screw propeller (admittedly augmented by sails on six masts). She was built in a special dry dock at Bristol, was floated in 1843 and made her first voyage to New York in 1845 (14 days 21 hours, average speed 9.4 knots). After service in many parts of the world, she was eventually abandoned in the *Falkland Islands. In 1970 she was brought home on a vast pontoon to *Bristol docks, where she is now on view.
