Great Bed of Ware
|
|
(Victoria and Albert Museum) Massive oak four-poster bed of c.1595, about 3.4m/11ft square, made originally for an inn at Ware, in Hertfordshire. It was a famous monster even in its own time, having the status of a tourist attraction for those travelling on one of the main roads north from London. In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night Sir Andrew Aguecheek is urged to write down enough lies to fill a sheet 'big enough for the bed of Ware'.
