(1648–1721) Woodcarver of consummate skill, particularly in his limewood wall panels of fruits, leaves and vegetables (a peapod was long considered to be a signature, but it was not invariably his). He worked also in stone and bronze. There is much of his carving in St Paul's Cathedral, including wooden choir stalls inside and stone decorative swags on the exterior. He contributed to many stately homes of the period, but the single most impressive display of his work is in the Carved Room at *Petworth. In about 1677 he was appointed Master Carver in Wood to Charles II.
