The Goon Show

(BBC 1952–60)
Probably the most celebrated of all comedy shows on British radio (*ITMA would be its only rival). It was written largely by Spike *Milligan, whose fellow performers were Peter *Sellers, Harry *Secombe and, at the start, Michael Bentine. The same team had begun a similar programme in 1951 under the title Crazy People, and the beginning of The Goon Show was in fact little more than a change of name. The series encapsulated, more than any other, the unpredictable lunacy which has been a hallmark of British comedy on radio and television.
