The Gondoliers
|
|
or, The King of Barataria (1889) A *Savoy opera by *Gilbert and *Sullivan, set in Venice where one of two gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, is supposedly the prince of Barataria. The duke of Plaza Toro, an impoverished and very unmilitary aristocrat ('He led his regiment from behind,/ He found it less exciting') arrives to marry his daughter Casilda to whichever is the prince. But Casilda loves her father's attendant Luiz; and happily it turns out that he, a changeling, is the one with the royal blood.
