Gog and Magog
|
|
Names in the biblical Revelation, representing nations which will fight each other at the time of the apocalypse. In the medieval legends about the founding of Britain by *Brut, the two names were rolled into that of a single giant, Gogmagog. By the 15C they were separate again in the form of two large painted wooden statues, Gog and Magog, which took part in London processions and were kept in the *Guildhall. The pair of them are still there, though they have twice been replaced – after being destroyed in the *Great Fire of 1666 and by bombing in 1940.
