George Cross

(GC) The highest award for heroism that can be awarded to civilians, ranking second only to the *Victoria Cross among all orders and decorations. It was instituted by George VI in 1940, the first year of the German bombing of British cities. In 1942 it was awarded to the entire island of *Malta, and in 2000 to the *RUC. Suspended from a dark blue ribbon, it consists of a plain silver cross with, at its centre, a medallion showing St George and the Dragon and bearing the words 'For Gallantry'.
