Owain Glyn Dwr
|
|
(More properly Owain ap Gruffudd in Welsh and traditionally Owen Glendower in English, c.1354–c.1416) Rebel against English rule in *Wales, siding from 1400 with the English opposition to *Henry IV. By 1404 he was in control of sufficient territory to declare himself prince of *Wales. But he was gradually driven from his strongholds by the young man who held that title more legitimately, the future *Henry V. Glendower was eventually reduced to leading little more than a band of guerrillas. The last mention of him, still refusing to make terms, dates from 1416. His name remains widely known because of his dramatic appearance in Shakespeare's *Henry IV, where he is a mad Welsh wizard in love with rhetoric.
