Geordie
|
|
Nickname for anyone from *Tyneside. The word is locally a diminutive of George, and was first applied to miners in the district (and to the safety lamp designed for them by George *Stephenson); it was also used of coal ships and their crews plying from Newcastle. Geordies are known for a strong local sense of identity and, in extreme cases, for an almost impenetrable accent.
