(d. 1155) Author of Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain), a collection of medieval legends about the origins of the nation. He begins with the founding of Britain by *Brut, continues with stories of individual rulers (including Shakespeare's Lear) and ends with the death of a last legendary British king, Cadwallader, and the dominance of the Anglo-Saxons.
