Geneva Convention
|
|
The name commonly used for the combined provisions of a series of agreements signed in Geneva and accepted by the majority of states. The first, in 1864, was linked with the establishment of the *Red Cross and was mainly concerned with the protection of sick and wounded soldiers. Additions in 1925 and 1929 coped with problems which had emerged in *World War I – banning gas and bacteriological warfare and laying down codes for the treatment of prisoners of war. The 1949 Convention brought in the new issues of *World War II, attempting in particular to protect civilians with regulations about the bombing of cities.
