Gay News
|
|
The largest-circulation homosexual newspaper in Britain, launched in 1972. It was prosecuted for blasphemy in 1977 in a widely publicized private case brought by Mary Whitehouse, after the publication of a poem by James Kirkup about Christ on the cross; the judgement was that the editor, Denis Lemon, was guilty of publishing a 'blasphemous libel' (he was fined and given a suspended sentence). Gay News ceased publication for a while in 1983, but since 1984 has been incorporated in Gay Times.
