Drury Lane
|
|
(Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London WC2) London's oldest theatrical site, with an unbroken record of production since 1663 (Nell *Gwyn first appeared on the stage here in 1665). The present theatre is the fourth. It opened in 1812, to a design by Benjamin Wyatt (son of James *Wyatt), but the interior was rebuilt in 1922. Since World War II the theatre has been the home of a succession of long-running musicals, most of them American.
