Elizabeth Fry
|
|
(Elizabeth Gurney, 1780–1845, m. Joseph Fry 1800) Quaker philanthropist who was the leading figure in early 19C prison reform. The plight of women prisoners in *Newgate prompted her to a campaign demanding segregation of the sexes, female supervision and improved conditions. She made the case so powerfully that she was soon invited to visit prisons and to make recommendations for improvement throughout Britain and much of Europe.
