Fort William
|
|
The name of two famous forts built in the 1690s, both named after William III, one in Calcutta and the other at the foot of Ben Nevis in Scotland. The site of the original Indian fort is now Calcutta's main post office; the present Fort William was built further south in 1757–81. The Scottish Fort William was pulled down in the 19C to make way for the railway. The town of the same name, which grew up around it, is now an important centre for tourism in the southern Highlands.
