The Forsyte Saga
|
|
The title under which various novels and fragments by *Galsworthy chronicling the Forsyte family were published together in 1922 (the main separate ingredients were The Man of Property 1906, In Chancery 1920, To Let 1921). Soames Forsyte, a successful solicitor, marries Irene in the 1880s and builds a house for her, Robin Hill. Love affairs, infidelities and remarriages frustrate the expected increase in wealth and happiness. Forty years on, after two generations of upset and disappointment, Robin Hill is empty and to let. The saga, rich in incident and detail, was the first to prove the great potential of such novels on television; it was dramatized by the BBC in 26 episodes in 1967 with Eric Porter as Soames and Nyree Dawn Porter (no relation) as Irene.
