E.M. Forster

(Edward Morgan Forster, 1879–1970) Novelist who observed with a cool eye the attitudes of the cultivated middle classes, often as revealed in a foreign setting. Italy is the background for Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905) and A Room with a View (1908), while misunderstandings between east and west gave him his greatest success in A *Passage to India (1924). Disconnections within English society are the theme of *Howard's End (1910). During his lifetime he circulated privately a partly autobiographical novel about a homosexual relationship, Maurice, which was published in 1971 just after his death. Highly successful films have been made in recent years from his books, which offer attractive locations and a wealth of cameo characters.
