Forestry Commission
|
|
(Edinburgh) Government agency established by the Forestry Act of 1919 in response to the timber shortage suffered during *World War I. Its original task was to create forests for strategic purposes, and the eventual target of 2 million hectares (nearly 5m acres) by the year 2000 was achieved ahead of time in 1983. The Commission's aims had meanwhile broadened to include the recreational use of forests, a national advisory role on forestry and timber, and commercial forestry on its own account.
