Football Association
|
|
(FA) Organization founded in 1863 to clarify the rules of *football, the resulting version of the game becoming known as soccer (Oxford undergraduate slang from the second syllable of Association). In 1871 it inaugurated the *FA Cup. It has remained responsible for all football in Britain apart from games in the *Football League. In 1992 it poached the top clubs from the league with the creation of its own Premier League – supporting its right to do so with the argument that the top clubs provide the players of the England team, for which the FA is responsible.
